Gesso’s exemplary reputation as a go-to primer just hints at its surprising capability. Its properties as a medium lend itself to some interesting and unpredictable mixed media results. It can promote an ethereal look in your art or be part of a high contrast design. This class will cover gesso types and varied usage techniques (including resists, sprays, washes, mixtures), substrate prep, and media additives that pair well. The first part of class will allow for experimentation galore on varied substrates and scattered composition tips throughout. Later, as in many of my classes, students will take one piece to the very end and mount it on the provided substrate. Come and explore the effects gesso can add to your art journaling, paper arts, altered work or paintings. It will most certainly become a staple in your studio.
