Homemade herb vinegar in a clip top bottle with a cute tag and a chalkboard label makes a beautiful kitchen decor item or a great gift!
This step-by-step tutorial shows you how to use etchall® etching crème (a resuable etching crème) to create a label area on a clip top bottle. The etched area has tooth which takes Plaid FolkArt Chalkboard Paint really well! Surrounding the chalkboard area is a fine etched line for detail.
Materials
- Bottle. The sample was made using KORKEN bottle with stopper, clear glass, from IKEA (#402.279.83, $2.99)
- Alcohol wipe
- etchall® etching crème
- etchall® etchmask
- etchall® etchmask transfer sheets
- etchall® Detail Pick Tool
- etchall® Squeegee
- Plastic spoon
- Painter’s Tape
- Tool to cut the etchmask, such as the Brother ScanNCut or the etchall® Swivel Knife
- Paper towels
- Basin with water (or access to a sink and running water)
- Plaid FolkArt Chalkboard Paint
- Small paint brush (e.g., #8 Round)
- Vinegar
- Herbs (e.g., Rosemary)
- Long skewer
- Chalk
- Gift tag

Step 1 - Cut Out the Stencil
Cover your work area with paper or plastic drop cloth. Cut out the stencil from etchmask using an electronic cutting machine or the swivel knife.
Step 2 - Weed and Apply the Stencil
Weed the stencil with the etchall® Detail Pick Tool. Clean the class well using the alcohol wipe. Cut a piece of transfer sheet to fit the size of the stencil.
Apply the transfer sheet to the stencil and burnish it down well. Separate the backing sheet away from the vinyl, so the vinyl is on the transfer sheet and the sticky side of the vinyl is exposed. Transfer the stencil to the glass and burnish it down well. Use the fleshy part of your finger and press the stencil down well. Don’t rub your finger back and forth over the stencil because you might lift the edges.
Step 3 - Apply etchall® etching crème
Use the painters tape to make a “gutter” on each side of the stencil. These gutters will catch any creme than might drip down the side of the glass. Cover any other exposed glass close to the edges of the stencil cut-outs to protect the glass. Use the plastic spoon to apply a heavy coat (about 1/8″ thick) of etchall® etching crème to the exposed glass.
Step 4 - Wait, Then Reclaim etchall® etching crème
Leave etching crème on design for 15 minutes. After etching time has elapsed, use the squeegee to return the crème back into the original container for later re-use.
Step 5 - Rinse & Dry
Wash the etched surface with the sponge in the basin or under running water to remove any remaining crème. Remember to keep crème away from porcelain sinks or ceramic tiles! Leave the stencil on and dry the area well.
Step 6 - Paint the Label Area with Chalk Paint
Use the painters tape to cover the outer border of the label area. You want to protect that fine border from the Plaid FolkArt Chalkboard Paint. Apply the first coat of Plaid FolkArt Chalkboard Paint to the exposed etched area using a small brush in horizontal strokes. Let that dry at least 1 hour. Apply a second coat with vertical brush strokes. Let that dry at least one hour. Remove the stencils and tape and let cure for 24 hours.
Thoroughly was the bottle inside and out. Dry the outside. Use chalk to write on the label.
Step 7 - Fill with Herb Vinegar
Fill the bottle with herb vinegar. Close the cap. Add a gift tag and enjoy!

- Tarragon and garlic (whole cloves) in white wine vinegar
- Dill weed and dried red peppers in red wine vinegar
- Lemon balm, lemongrass, and lemon verbena in champagne vinegar
- Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme in sherry vinegar
- Fennel and thyme in rice vinegar
- Lavender in cider vinegar
- Chives and mustard seeds in malt vinegar
