Instructions

  1. Create a stencil of the branch and one for the owl by cutting the patterns out of the stencil material using an electronic cutting machine or a craft knife. I used the Zing electronic cutting machine to cut vinyl for my stencils. Click here to download the patterns for the owl and branch stencils as a PDF file.

  2. Stencil the branch shape on the tote bag.
    1. Spray the back of the stencil with stencil adhesive, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

  3. Stencil the owl shape on the tote bag.
    1. Spray the back of the stencil with stencil adhesive, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
    2. Adhere the stencil to the tote with a piece of masking or painter’s tape.
    3. Apply Burnt Umber and a drop of Wheat to the Studio Paper and mix it with the stir stick to make a light brown fluid acrylic.
    4. Push the fluid acrylic through the stencil using the stencil brush.
    5. Remove the stencil.
    6. Paint over the bridge areas by hand, so the outer portion of the owl is completely painted. Leave the circle on the chest unpainted. Let the fluid acrylic dry.
    7. Touch up any necessary spots with the #4 round brush and let dry.
Owl On Branch - 4 - Stamp Leaves
  4. Stamp leaves on the branch
    1. Apply Dark Green and a drop of Green Pearl to the Studio Paper and mix with the stir stick to make a light green fluid acrylic.
    2. Carefully stamp assorted leaves on to the branch.
    3. Touch up any necessary spots with the #4 round brush and let dry.
      Kaleidoscope Kreator 3
  5. Using Kaleidoscope Kreator 3, create a kaleidoscope for the owl’s chest and flowers for the branch.
    1. The Circle 12 makes a great template for the chest. The finished piece should be 2-7/8″ in diameter.
    2. The flowers can range in size. Flowers about ¾” to 1-1/8″ look great.
  6. Print the kaleidoscopes onto Craft Attitude following the manufacturer’s instructions.
    Kaleidoscope from Lion Paper Lantern
  7. Cut out the kaleidoscopes and adhere them to the tote following the manufacturer’s instructions. Applying glue stick to the front of the kaleidoscopes, adhering them face down and peeling away the backing sheet works great!
  8. Cut out eyes (1¼” diameter) and a nose from the tan felt. Cut out pupils (¾” diameter) from the black felt. Adhere the eyes, pupils and nose with fabric glue or double-sided sticky tape.
